CPAP and BiPAP

If you have recently been diagnosed by a doctor with sleep apnea, a CPAP machine (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) may have been suggested as a home therapy to help you stop snoring and breathe more normally as you sleep.

Basic types of equipment

  • A CPAP machine provides positive pressure at all times.
  • Bi-PAP macnines provide two levels of air pressure; one for inhalation, and a decreased pressure for exhalation. This mimics normal inhalation/exhalation breathing.
  • Auto-titrate CPAPs or BiPAP's adjust the pressure by giving you more or less pressure as you need it.
  • Smart Data is used on many high end units to record data that can be supplied back to your physician and sleep lab.
  • Heated humidifiers are often used in conjunction with CPAP and Bi-PAP in an effort to make adjusting to, and sleeping better with CPAP. This also increases the humidity to your sinus cavities and airways, decreasing drying of the membranes.

MASKS AND INTERFACE APPLIANCES

Choosing a mask type or nasal appliance can be the most important part of your success with CPAP therapy. There are numerous different styles and brands on the market as well as nasal pillow selections. A trained respiratory therapist will be able to assist you in selecting the best fitting mask for you.
